Chapter summary
After a sleepless night Nick goes to Gatsby, who says he watched Daisy's house all night. Around four in the morning she appeared at a window and then turned out the light. Nick suggests he leave town, but Gatsby refuses to abandon Daisy. He tells Nick about the past: the officer he was at Camp Taylor, how he won Daisy while hiding his lack of money, and how she chose Tom after Gatsby was delayed abroad and went to Oxford. Before leaving for the city Nick calls out that Gatsby is worth the whole bunch of them put together.
At work Nick has an awkward call with Jordan. The story then turns to the garage. Wilson, sitting up with Michaelis, tells him that the day before he found a dog leash on Myrtle's bureau and decided she had a lover. He sets out that morning and eventually reaches West Egg. At two o'clock Gatsby goes to the pool with an air mattress, waiting for a phone call that never comes. Shots are heard. Nick finds Gatsby's body in the pool, and Wilson's body in the grass nearby.
