Chapter summary

After Gatsby's death, police and reporters fill his house. Daisy and Tom have left without a forwarding address, and Nick finds that he must arrange everything himself. Wolfshiem sends a letter. Gatsby's father, Henry C. Gatz, arrives from Minnesota. Klipspringer calls only to ask for his tennis shoes. On the morning of the funeral Nick visits Wolfshiem in person, and Wolfshiem says he will not attend because he does not want to get mixed up when a man dies. Back at the house, Gatz proudly shows Nick a picture of the mansion and a schedule his son wrote as a boy.

Few people come to the funeral. Nick then decides to leave the East. He tells Jordan their relationship is over. On Fifth Avenue he meets Tom, who admits he told Wilson the car was Gatsby's and feels he did the right thing. On his last night Nick goes to Gatsby's empty house, then walks to the beach and thinks of the green light and of Gatsby's dream.
