Chapter summary
A reporter comes to Gatsby's door asking for a statement, which leads Nick to tell what he knows about Gatsby's past. Gatsby was born James Gatz in North Dakota. He briefly attended a Lutheran college in Minnesota, then worked odd jobs by Lake Superior. At seventeen he rowed out to the yacht of Dan Cody, a wealthy man, and took a new name. He served Cody for about five years. Cody was drawn in by a woman named Ella Kaye and died soon after. Gatsby was left a $25,000 legacy that he never received; the money went to Ella Kaye.
In the present, Tom rides to Gatsby's house with a Mr. Sloane and a woman, and they leave without accepting Gatsby's dinner invitation. Tom and Daisy later come to one of Gatsby's parties. Daisy dislikes it, and Tom questions where Gatsby's money comes from. Afterward Gatsby is disappointed. Nick warns that the past cannot be repeated, but Gatsby insists that it can.
