Chapter summary

Nick comes home one night to find Gatsby's mansion blazing with light. Gatsby offers Nick a chance to earn money on the side, but Nick refuses. Nick then invites Daisy to tea. On a rainy afternoon Gatsby has Nick's grass cut and arrives nervous and formally dressed.

Daisy arrives. The first meeting is stiff and awkward, and Gatsby is close to panic. Nick leaves the two alone, and when he returns they have reconciled. When the rain stops, Gatsby shows them his mansion. Daisy admires his belongings and is moved to tears by his shirts. From the window Gatsby tells Daisy about the green light at the end of Daisy's dock, and Nick guesses that it now means less to him. Klipspringer, a boarder in the house, plays the piano. Nick sees that Gatsby's dream of five years cannot fully match the real Daisy, but Gatsby adjusts. When Nick leaves, the two of them seem to have forgotten that he exists.
