Chapter summary

Nick lists the guests who came to Gatsby's parties that summer. One morning Gatsby drives Nick to lunch in New York in his showy car and tells him his life story: a wealthy Middle Western family, Oxford, years of travel in Europe, and bravery in the war. He shows a medal from Montenegro and a photograph from Oxford as proof. A policeman stops them for speeding, but Gatsby shows a card and they are let go.

At lunch Gatsby introduces Meyer Wolfshiem, whose cuff buttons are made from human molars. Nick learns Wolfshiem is linked to fixing the 1919 World Series. When Tom Buchanan appears, Gatsby seems embarrassed and leaves. Later Jordan Baker tells Nick over tea that Gatsby loved Daisy in Louisville in 1917, before she married Tom. Gatsby bought his house to be across the bay from her. He wants Nick to invite Daisy to tea and let him come over. Nick and Jordan then embrace in Central Park.
