Chapter summary

John Thornton nurses Buck back to health by the river while the spring days pass. Skeet, a small Irish setter, cleans Buck's wounds, and Nig, a huge black dog, is another friendly companion. Buck feels deep love for the first time, and Thornton is the ideal master. Yet Buck also hears a call from the forest, and only his love for Thornton draws him back to the fire. Thornton's partners, Hans and Pete, arrive on a raft, and the group heads toward the Tanana. At a cliff Thornton tests Buck's obedience with a thoughtless command, and he grabs Buck as Buck starts to obey. In Circle City, Buck attacks a man named Burton, and a miners' meeting clears him. On Forty-Mile Creek Buck saves Thornton from the rapids, though he is found to have three broken ribs. In Dawson, in the Eldorado Saloon, Thornton boasts about Buck's strength. Matthewson doubts the claim and sets the terms, and Jim O'Brien lends Thornton the stake. Buck breaks out the sled and wins the bet.
