Chapter summary
After thirty days on the Salt Water Mail, Buck's team reaches Skaguay worn out. Buck has dropped from one hundred forty pounds to one hundred fifteen. The dogs are sold cheaply to Hal, Charles and Mercedes, three inexperienced travelers from the States. The sled is badly overloaded and tips over in the street. Townspeople tell them to halve the load. They add six Outside dogs, so the team has fourteen, but they have no idea how much food that many dogs need. They first overfeed, then run short. The dogs die one by one. Dub is shot, then the six Outside dogs, then Billee and Koona. The three travelers quarrel constantly, and Mercedes rides the sled. At John Thornton's camp on the White River, Thornton warns them that the ice is rotten. Hal ignores him and beats Buck, who will not rise. Thornton stops Hal and cuts Buck's traces. The sled party goes on, and a section of ice gives way beneath them. Thornton and Buck watch it happen, and Buck licks his hand.
