Chapter summary
With the money from the bet, John Thornton, Hans and Pete head east with Buck and other dogs, hunting for a fabled lost mine. They wander for months. They never find the cabin, but they do find a rich placer where gold piles up outside their lodge. Buck dreams of the hairy man from the old world and keeps hearing a call in the forest. One night he follows it and meets a timber wolf. They run together for hours, but Buck remembers Thornton and goes back to camp. Later he wanders for a week and kills a bear. He then spends four days wearing down a wounded bull moose. When he returns to camp, he finds Nig and Hans dead, then sees a band of Yeehats dancing around the wreckage of the lodge. Buck attacks, kills many of them and drives off the rest. Pete lies dead in his blankets and Skeet at the edge of a pool, where Thornton's trail ends, and Buck knows his master is dead. That night a wolf pack arrives, and after a fight Buck is greeted by the wolf he met earlier. Buck howls and runs with the pack.
