Chapter summary

Next morning François finds Spitz gone and Buck wounded. He puts Sol-leks in the lead position, but Buck drives Sol-leks out and takes the place himself. François and Perrault chase him for nearly an hour with clubs. At last Perrault tells François to throw down the club, and Buck trots in to the front. As leader he proves better than Spitz and brings the team back into order. They make a record run to Skaguay, averaging forty miles a day for fourteen days. Then François and Perrault pass out of Buck's life, and a new driver takes the team back to Dawson with the mail. The work is heavy, and the dogs wear down. By the fire Buck sometimes sees a short-legged, hairy man from a much earlier age. Dave, hurt inside, falls again and again. When the driver takes him out of the traces, he fights to keep his place and bites through Sol-leks's traces. The drivers let him pull. Next morning he cannot go on and is left behind, and a shot rings out.
