Chapter summary
Out on the trail, Buck grows more cunning and avoids fights, while Spitz keeps bullying him. At Lake Le Barge Buck finds his nest taken by Spitz and attacks. Before the fight can go further, starving huskies from a nearby village raid the camp, and the team is wounded and loses half its food. On the Thirty Mile River Perrault breaks through the ice again and again, and the sled goes through once too. Buck's feet are sore, and François makes him moccasins. At the Pelly, Dolly goes mad and chases Buck until François kills her with an axe. Spitz then attacks the exhausted Buck, and François whips Spitz. Buck now openly undermines Spitz, coming between him and dogs he means to punish, and the team grows unruly. After a rest in Dawson, the team heads back toward Dyea. At the mouth of the Tahkeena a snowshoe rabbit sets off a chase by the whole pack. Spitz cuts across and kills the rabbit, and Buck charges him. The two fight in a silent ring of dogs, and Buck wins.
