Chapter summary

Buck's first day on the Dyea beach shows him that the North has no fair play. Curly, a friendly Newfoundland, goes to meet a husky and is torn apart by a ring of huskies in about two minutes. Buck sees the lead dog Spitz laugh at the sight, and from then on he hates Spitz. François puts Buck in a harness and sets him to haul firewood. Buck learns the commands, and Dave, the wheel dog, nips him when he errs. The team grows with Billee and Joe, two brothers, and the one-eyed Sol-leks. That night Perrault and François drive Buck from the tent. Cold and lost, he finds Billee curled in a hole under the snow, digs his own and sleeps. He wakes buried and bursts out in fear. The team of nine then climbs the canyon above Dyea, crosses the Chilcoot Divide and reaches Lake Bennett. Buck is always hungry, and after watching Pike he steals bacon. His body hardens, and the instincts of his wild ancestors begin to wake.
