Chapter summary

Buck, a large dog with a St. Bernard father and a shepherd mother, rules a big estate in California's Santa Clara Valley in 1897. He does not know that the Klondike gold rush has made strong dogs valuable. One night a gardener's helper with a gambling habit leads him out through the orchard and hands him to a stranger at a railway station. A rope goes around Buck's neck. He fights, and he is choked senseless. He is shipped to San Francisco and locked in a crate. He then rides by express car to Seattle, going two days and nights without food or water. There a man in a red sweater opens the crate with a hatchet. Buck charges again and again, and each time a club knocks him down. He is beaten but not broken. He learns that a man with a club is a lawgiver. Later a French-Canadian courier named Perrault buys Buck. Buck is taken below on the Narwhal along with a Newfoundland named Curly. They sail north on the Narwhal with a second driver, François. Buck feels snow for the first time.
