Act summary
In Act 4 Paris tells Friar Lawrence that he will marry Juliet on Thursday. Juliet comes to the cell, and once Paris leaves she threatens to kill herself rather than marry him. The Friar gives her a vial of liquid to drink the night before the wedding. It will make her seem dead for forty-two hours, and her family will lay her in the family tomb. He says he will send a friar to Mantua with a letter for Romeo, so that Romeo can come and take her away to Mantua when she wakes. Back home, Juliet tells her father she will obey him, and Capulet is so pleased that he moves the wedding up a day. Alone in her room, Juliet fears the drink might be poison or that she might wake early in the tomb, but she drinks it anyway. In the morning, the household is busy with wedding plans. The Nurse tries to wake Juliet and finds her seemingly dead, and the family mourns.
