Act summary
Act 3 begins in a Verona street, where Tybalt looks for Romeo to challenge him. Romeo refuses to fight, saying he has a reason to love Tybalt and that he holds the Capulet name as dear as his own, since he is now married to Tybalt's cousin. Mercutio takes offense and fights Tybalt instead. Romeo steps between them, and Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo's arm. Mercutio dies, and Romeo, in anger, kills Tybalt. The Prince banishes Romeo from Verona. The Nurse tells Juliet the news, and Juliet is torn between grief for her cousin and love for her husband. Friar Lawrence hides Romeo, then sends him to spend the night with Juliet before leaving for Mantua. Meanwhile Capulet promises Paris that Juliet will marry him on Thursday. Romeo and Juliet part at dawn. Lady Capulet tells Juliet about the wedding, and when Juliet refuses, Capulet threatens to disown her. Her mother will not help, and the Nurse tells her to marry Paris. Juliet decides to ask the Friar for help.
