Act summary
In Act 5 Romeo hears in Mantua from his servant Balthasar that Juliet is dead. He has not received the Friar's letter, so he buys poison from an apothecary and rides for Verona. Friar John tells Friar Lawrence that the letter was never delivered because he was shut in a house during a plague scare. The Friar hurries to the tomb to be there when Juliet wakes. At the tomb, Paris is mourning when Romeo arrives. They fight, and Romeo kills Paris. Romeo then drinks the poison beside Juliet. Friar Lawrence arrives too late. Juliet wakes, and when she sees Romeo dead she stabs herself with his dagger. The Prince comes, and the Friar explains what happened. The families end their feud, at the cost of their children.
