Act summary

In Act 2 Romeo leaves his friends and climbs into the Capulet orchard. He sees Juliet at her window, and she says his name aloud, wishing he were not a Montague. Romeo speaks up, and they promise their love to each other. Juliet says she will send a messenger to him at nine the next morning to learn where and when they will marry. At dawn Romeo goes to Friar Lawrence, who is gathering herbs, and asks him to marry them. The Friar is surprised that Romeo has forgotten Rosaline so fast, but he agrees, hoping the marriage might end the feud. In the street Romeo jokes with Mercutio and Benvolio, then meets the Nurse and tells her Juliet should come to the Friar's cell that afternoon. The Nurse teases Juliet with slow news before passing it on. Juliet goes to the cell, where Romeo and the Friar wait, and the Friar leads them off to marry them in secret.
