Act summary
Act 1 opens with a street fight in Verona between servants of the Capulet and Montague houses. Benvolio tries to stop it, but Tybalt joins in, and Prince Escalus warns that anyone who disturbs the peace again will pay with his life. Benvolio then learns that Romeo is moping over a woman who has sworn to stay unmarried. Capulet tells Count Paris that his daughter Juliet, not yet fourteen, is too young to marry for two more years, but he invites Paris to a feast. A servant sent with the guest list asks Romeo to read it, and Romeo learns that Rosaline will be at the feast. Meanwhile Lady Capulet and the Nurse talk with Juliet about marrying Paris, and Juliet agrees only to look and see whether she can like him, as far as her mother's consent allows. Romeo and his friends go to the feast in masks. Mercutio teases him with a long speech about Queen Mab. At the feast Romeo sees Juliet and forgets Rosaline. They talk and kiss, then learn from the Nurse that each belongs to the enemy family. Tybalt recognizes Romeo's voice, but Capulet stops him from fighting.
