Chapter summary

The ladies of Longbourn visit those of Netherfield, and the visit is returned. Mrs. Hurst and Miss Bingley like Jane's pleasant manners, but they find Mrs. Bennet hard to bear and pay the younger sisters no attention. Elizabeth sees that their kindness to Jane probably comes from admiration of their brother.

Elizabeth talks with her friend Charlotte Lucas about Jane and Mr. Bingley. Charlotte warns that Jane's calm manner could cost her the match if Bingley cannot tell how she feels, and she says a woman should show more affection than she feels. Elizabeth disagrees, believing Jane is simply behaving naturally. Charlotte adds that happiness in marriage is a matter of chance.

Meanwhile, Darcy's listening draws Elizabeth's notice, but she has no idea that he is beginning to admire her. At a gathering at Sir William Lucas's house, she sings a song or two, and then Mary plays a long concerto, followed by lighter tunes for dancing. When Sir William urges Darcy to dance with Elizabeth, she refuses. Later Darcy tells Miss Bingley that he has been thinking about Elizabeth's fine eyes, and she is astonished.
