Chapter summary

At the Netherfield ball Elizabeth looks for Mr. Wickham and does not find him. Mr. Denny tells her Wickham has gone to town on business and hints that he wished to avoid a certain gentleman. Elizabeth dances first with Mr. Collins, who is awkward. Darcy then asks her to dance, and she is so surprised that she accepts. They trade sharp remarks about conversation and silence, and Darcy grows cold when she brings up Wickham.

Miss Bingley warns Elizabeth against Wickham, but Elizabeth does not accept her account. Jane is glowing about Bingley. Mr. Collins learns that Darcy is Lady Catherine de Bourgh's nephew and approaches him, and Darcy answers with cold civility. At supper Mrs. Bennet talks loudly about Jane's likely marriage to Bingley within Darcy's hearing, and Elizabeth is mortified. Mary sings until her father stops her. Mrs. Bennet is left dreaming of Jane at Netherfield.
