Chapter summary
The book opens in the Bennet home with a conversation between Mrs. Bennet and her husband. She is excited because Netherfield Park, a large house nearby, has finally been rented. The new tenant is Mr. Bingley, a young single man from the north of England who has four or five thousand pounds a year. He came to see the house on Monday in a fine carriage, liked it, and agreed to move in before Michaelmas.
Mrs. Bennet wants her husband to call on Mr. Bingley as soon as possible. She hopes he will marry one of their five daughters. Mr. Bennet does not take her seriously. He answers with dry jokes and suggests that she and the girls could go instead. He remarks that the girls are silly like other girls, though Lizzy is a little quicker. Mrs. Bennet is offended and says he ruins her nerves. The chapter ends with a short portrait of the couple. Mr. Bennet is clever, sarcastic and reserved, while his wife has little understanding and thinks only of getting her daughters married.
