Chapter summary
The morning after Darcy's proposal, Elizabeth is troubled and goes for a walk. She avoids her usual path in the park, afraid of meeting Darcy. Along the lane she catches sight of him coming from the grove that edges the park, and they meet at the gate. He hands her a letter and leaves without saying more.
Elizabeth reads the long letter as she walks. Darcy answers two charges from her refusal. On Bingley and Jane, he says he thought Jane showed no particular affection for Bingley, and he explains why he separated them. On Wickham, he describes Wickham's character and his failed plans for the church, and says Wickham demanded money instead. He also says Wickham tried to elope with Darcy's sister Georgiana, who was fifteen, at Ramsgate.
