Act summary

In a cavern the witches stir their cauldron and chant, and Hecate praises their work. Macbeth demands answers. Three apparitions appear. An armed head tells him to beware Macduff, a bloody child says no man born of woman can harm him, and a crowned child says he is safe until Birnam wood comes to Dunsinane hill. Then a show of eight kings passes, with Banquo last. Lennox tells Macbeth that Macduff has fled to England, and Macbeth resolves to seize Macduff's castle. At Fife, Ross visits Lady Macduff and leaves, and she talks with her young son. Murderers arrive and kill the boy, and Lady Macduff runs out crying murder. In England Malcolm tests Macduff by claiming to have terrible vices, then takes the claims back and says Old Siward is raising ten thousand men. Ross brings news that Macduff's wife and children have been slaughtered, and Macduff vows revenge.
