Act summary
A doctor and a waiting gentlewoman watch Lady Macbeth walk in her sleep with a taper, rubbing her hands and speaking of blood. The doctor says she needs God more than a physician. Scottish thanes set out to join Malcolm's army near Birnam wood, saying Macbeth's rule hangs loose on him. Macbeth trusts the prophecies and calls for his armor. Malcolm orders every soldier to cut a bough and carry it before him. In the castle Macbeth hears a cry of women, and Seyton tells him the queen is dead. A messenger then says the wood seems to move. Macbeth fears the witches have tricked him but resolves to fight. Malcolm's men throw down the boughs. Macbeth kills Young Siward, then meets Macduff, who says he was cut from his mother's womb before his time. Macbeth fights on and is killed. Macduff brings in his head and hails Malcolm as king.
