Act summary

Banquo suspects that Macbeth, now king, got the crown by foul play. Macbeth invites him to a supper and learns that Banquo and Fleance will ride out first. Alone, Macbeth hires two murderers, persuading them that Banquo is to blame for their misfortunes, and orders them to kill Banquo and Fleance that night. Lady Macbeth finds the victory hollow, and Macbeth hints at a deed of dreadful note. In a park a third murderer joins the two. They kill Banquo, but Fleance escapes in the dark. At the banquet the first murderer tells Macbeth that Fleance got away. Banquo's ghost sits in Macbeth's place and Macbeth reacts in horror, while Lady Macbeth tells the guests it is an old illness. Lady Macbeth sends the guests away, and Macbeth says he will visit the witches. Hecate scolds the witches for dealing with Macbeth without her. Lennox and another lord speak guardedly about the deaths and tell of Malcolm's refuge in England.
