Act summary
Late at night Banquo and his son Fleance cross the castle court, and Macbeth speaks briefly with Banquo. Alone, Macbeth sees a dagger in the air, and a bell tells him it is time. In the next scene Lady Macbeth waits, having drugged the grooms' drink. Macbeth returns, saying he has done the deed, and tells her of a voice crying that he will sleep no more. She tells him to wash his hands, and knocking is heard. The Porter plays keeper of hell's gate before letting in Macduff and Lennox. Macduff finds Duncan murdered and raises the alarm. Macbeth says he killed the grooms because his violent love for Duncan outran his reason. Malcolm and Donalbain, fearing for their own lives, decide to flee, Malcolm to England and Donalbain to Ireland. Outside, Ross and an old man talk about strange events in nature. Macduff reports that Macbeth is to be crowned at Scone and returns to Fife.
