Act summary
Three witches plan to meet Macbeth. In a camp near Forres, a wounded sergeant tells King Duncan how Macbeth beat the rebel Macdonwald, and Duncan sentences the Thane of Cawdor to death. On a heath the witches greet Macbeth as Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor and a future king, and tell Banquo his children will be kings. Ross and Angus then bring word that Macbeth is Thane of Cawdor. Duncan praises Macbeth and Banquo, names his son Malcolm Prince of Cumberland, and says he will visit Macbeth's castle at Inverness. Macbeth sees Malcolm as an obstacle to the crown. At Inverness Lady Macbeth reads her husband's letter, calls on spirits to strip her of softness, and welcomes the king. Macbeth weighs the reasons against the murder, but Lady Macbeth challenges his courage and lays out a plan to make Duncan's chamberlains drunk and blame them.
