Chapter summary
A terrible cry from the third storey wakes the guests at Thornfield. Rochester comes down with a candle and tells them a servant has had a nightmare, then sends them back to bed. Jane knows from the sounds she heard that this is not the whole truth. Later Rochester asks her to bring a sponge and volatile salts and takes her up to a small room, where Mr. Mason sits bleeding in a chair. Rochester leaves Jane to watch over him and tells Mason not to speak to her.
At dawn Rochester returns with Mr. Carter, the surgeon, who dresses the wounds. Mason then says that a woman bit him, and they put him into a post-chaise. Rochester then takes Jane into the orchard. He tells Jane he cannot warn Mason of the danger, puts a made-up case to her about a man who has made a serious mistake, and asks whether he could set aside an obstacle of custom. He mentions Miss Ingram and asks Jane to sit up with him the night before his wedding.
