Chapter summary
In the grounds at Thornfield, Rochester tells Jane that Adèle is the daughter of Céline Varens, a French opera dancer he once loved. He tells how he watched her with a young vicomte from her balcony and ended the relationship, then fought the vicomte and shot him in the arm. Céline had already named Adèle as his child before the break. Years later she abandoned the girl, and he took her in. He asks whether Jane will now look for another post, and she says Adèle is not to blame and she will not leave her.
That night Jane hears a strange sound above her and a low laugh at her door. In the gallery she finds smoke coming from Rochester's room, where the bed curtains are on fire. She wakes him and douses the flames with water. He goes up to the third storey, comes back. Jane has wondered aloud whether it was Grace Poole, and he agrees that it was. He asks Jane to keep it quiet, thanks her for saving his life and holds her hand. She spends the rest of the night unable to sleep.
