Chapter summary

On the morning after Rochester asks her to marry him, Jane wakes, wonders if it was real and dresses in plain summer clothes. Mrs. Fairfax is quiet. Rochester sends Adèle away and tells Jane they will be married in four weeks. Jane refuses the jewels he talks of and asks him to speak to Mrs. Fairfax, who is shocked and doubtful when she hears the news.

That day Rochester takes Jane and Adèle in a carriage to Millcote. In a silk warehouse he makes Jane choose dresses, and she asks for quiet colors. As they leave the shops she feels annoyed and degraded. She thinks of her uncle John Eyre, who might leave her money, and in the carriage she threatens to wear her old gingham to the wedding. She tells Rochester she will keep teaching Adèle for her usual pay. In the evening she asks him to sing. For the rest of the month she keeps him teased and cross, and he calls her names such as a provoking puppet. The chapter ends with Jane admitting that he has become her whole world.
