Chapter summary

The raft goes south into warmer country, and the king and the duke fail at one scheme after another. Huck and Jim suspect the pair are up to something worse and agree to get away from them when they can. At Pikesville the king goes ashore. Huck and the duke find him drunk at a tavern, and when Huck gets back to the raft, Jim is gone.

A boy tells Huck that Jim has been caught as a runaway and is at Silas Phelps's place, sold by a stranger for forty dollars. Huck writes a letter to Miss Watson saying where Jim is, then thinks about Jim on the river. He tears the letter up and chooses to steal Jim out of slavery himself, in his own words. The text shows his sense that this goes against what he was taught. The duke admits the king sold Jim, and sends Huck off in the wrong direction. Huck sets out, then doubles back toward the Phelps farm.
