Chapter summary

Huck reaches the Phelps farm on a still, hot, sunshiny day that feels like Sunday. Hounds come out to meet him until an enslaved woman drives them off with a rolling pin. Mrs. Phelps then comes out of the house, hugs him and treats him as a relation she has been expecting, her nephew. Huck is caught off guard but goes along with it.

She asks why he is late, and he makes up a story about a steamboat breakdown. She hides him behind a bed to surprise her husband, Uncle Silas, who comes in worried that the visitor has not arrived. Then she presents Huck as Tom Sawyer, and the old man is delighted. Huck spends two hours inventing family news. When a steamboat passes, he worries that the real Tom may be on it. He says he will go for his baggage, and resolves to meet the real Tom before Tom reaches the house.
