Chapter summary
A mob rushes to Sherburn's house, tears down his fence and fills the yard. Sherburn comes out on his porch with a double-barreled gun and calmly speaks to them for some time. He says they are cowards, and that a crowd needs a man at its head, pointing at Buck Harkness. Then he tells them to go, and they scatter, with Buck Harkness among them.
Huck sneaks into a circus without paying. He sees performers riding horses and then a drunk man who interrupts and demands to ride. The man stays on the bolting horse, does tricks and removes layer after layer of clothing. Huck sees that he is one of the company. That evening the duke's show draws only about twelve people, so the duke plans a new one, the Royal Nonesuch, makes handbills, and adds a line of his own at the bottom.
