Chapter summary

Huck and Jim drift south toward Cairo, the town where the Ohio River joins the Mississippi and where they would be in a free state. Jim keeps watching for its lights and talks about saving money to buy his wife and children. Huck grows uneasy, because he feels he is helping take someone away from his owner. He decides to paddle to shore and tell on Jim, but Jim says Huck is his best and only friend, and Huck wavers.

Two men with guns stop him and ask about the raft. The men ask whether his man is white or black, and Huck answers that he is white. He then asks them to help tow the raft because his father is there and sick, so the men think it is smallpox, and they give him forty dollars before leaving. They miss Cairo in the fog, find the Ohio's clear water, and lose their canoe. A steamboat then hits the raft and the two are separated in the river.
