Chapter summary
After leaving the island, Huck and Jim tie their raft up at a tow-head, a sandbar with cottonwoods, and hide it under branches. Jim builds a wigwam on it. They float south for several nights, and Huck goes ashore at night to get food. They talk about whether taking such things counts as borrowing.
During a bad storm they come on a wrecked steamboat, and Huck persuades a reluctant Jim to explore it. When they hear a man begging for his life, a frightened Jim heads back toward the raft, but Huck stays out of curiosity. Only Huck sees the tied man, Jim Turner, and the men standing over him, Bill and Jake Packard. Bill wants to kill him, but Packard argues that shooting is risky and that the sinking wreck will do the job. Huck hides in an upper berth and hears this. He and Jim then plan to cut loose the men's boat, but Jim reports that their own raft has drifted off.
