Chapter summary
Huck Finn, who narrates the whole book, explains that he was left with money after the events of an earlier book, and that Judge Thatcher is looking after it. He lives with the Widow Douglas, who is trying to make him respectable. She makes him wear proper clothes, come to meals on time and learn about Moses from the Bible. Huck loses interest when he finds out Moses is long dead. He asks to smoke, and she says no.
The widow's sister, Miss Watson, joins in with spelling lessons and corrections. She also describes heaven and hell, and Huck says he would rather go to the bad place, which upsets her. That night Huck sits alone in his room, feeling lonely and uneasy. A spider falls into his candle, and he goes through superstitious motions to keep off bad luck. Later he hears a twig snap outside and a signal he knows, and finds Tom Sawyer waiting among the trees.
