Chapter summary
Nelly Dean is telling Lockwood the story, and she continues with the events at Wuthering Heights after old Mr. Earnshaw's death. Hindley, now drunk and angry, threatens Nelly with a knife. He holds his son Hareton over the banister, and the child falls but is caught by Heathcliff. Hindley tells Nelly to convey herself and the child away, and Heathcliff to get out of his reach and hearing.
Catherine then tells Nelly in the kitchen that Edgar Linton has asked her to marry him and she has said yes. She says she loves Edgar as foliage in the woods but Heathcliff like the rocks beneath. She also says marrying Heathcliff would now degrade her. Heathcliff, who has been listening, slips out before she says more. Nelly tells Catherine that he heard a good part of it, and Catherine rushes out to look for him. She spends the stormy night in the rain, calling for him. She becomes feverish. After she recovers at Thrushcross Grange, Mr. and Mrs. Linton die of her fever. Catherine marries Edgar and Nelly goes with her. Nelly sees how late it is and stops there.
