Chapter summary

Lockwood tells us he has been ill for four weeks. When Heathcliff visits his sickbed, Lockwood asks Nelly Dean to go on with her story, and from there she narrates. She says Catherine settled in at Thrushcross Grange and was happy with Edgar for about half a year. One September evening Nelly meets a tall man at the kitchen door, who proves to be Heathcliff, back after three years. Catherine welcomes him with joy, and Edgar is annoyed.

Heathcliff lodges at Wuthering Heights and begins to visit the Grange. Edgar's sister Isabella falls in love with him. Isabella complains that she is always sent away and calls Catherine a dog in the manger. Catherine then warns her that Heathcliff is pitiless and dangerous, and later teases Isabella in front of Heathcliff, and Isabella scratches Catherine's arm and runs out. Heathcliff asks whether Isabella is her brother's heir, and Catherine tells him to leave the subject alone. Nelly decides to watch him closely.
