Chapter summary

On another Sunday, Utterson and Enfield take their usual walk through the by-street and pass the door again. Enfield says he hopes they have seen the last of Hyde. Utterson admits he once met Hyde and felt the same disgust. Enfield adds that he has learned the door is a back entrance to Jekyll's house.

They step into the court to look at the windows. The middle one is half open, and Jekyll sits beside it, looking like a sad prisoner. Utterson greets him warmly. Jekyll says he is very low and will not last long. He will not come for a walk, saying he dare not, so the two men talk with him from below. Jekyll begins to smile, and then his face changes to such terror and despair that both men freeze. The window is slammed shut. They walk away in silence, and only when they reach a busier street do they look at each other with shared horror.
