Chapter summary

On January 8th Utterson dines at Jekyll's with Lanyon and other guests, and the three old friends seem reconciled. A few days later Jekyll's door is closed to visitors, and Utterson is turned away again and again.

Worried, he calls on Lanyon and is shocked to find him thin, pale and looking near death. When Utterson mentions Jekyll, Lanyon says he wants to see or hear nothing more of him. Utterson writes to Jekyll and gets a long, odd reply. Jekyll says the quarrel with Lanyon is final, that he will live in extreme seclusion, and that he has brought a punishment and a danger on himself that he cannot name. He asks Utterson to respect his silence.

In less than a fortnight Lanyon dies. Afterward Utterson receives an envelope from him marked for Utterson alone. Inside is a sealed packet to be opened only after Jekyll dies or disappears. Utterson decides not to open it. He visits Jekyll less often.
