Chapter summary

Jane tells us she has been content at Thornfield, where Mrs. Fairfax is kind and Adèle has grown obedient, but she longs for a wider life. She walks the third-storey corridor and hears the low laugh she has heard before, and she sees Grace Poole carrying a pot of porter.

On a cold January afternoon Mrs. Fairfax asks for a holiday for Adèle, who has a cold, and Jane agrees. Jane then volunteers to carry a letter to Hay. She sits on a stile as the moon rises. A horse and a large dog come along the lane, and the horse slips on the ice and throws its rider. Jane offers help. The man is gruff, asks whose house Thornfield is, and learns that Jane is the governess. He leans on her shoulder to reach his horse, asks for his whip and sends her on. After posting the letter, Jane returns and finds the dog by the fire. Leah explains who has arrived, and Mrs. Fairfax says the surgeon, Mr. Carter, is with him.
