Chapter summary
It is a cold November day and bad weather has stopped the walk. Jane, who is ten and lives with her aunt, Mrs. Reed, is told to keep apart from her cousins Eliza, John and Georgiana until she behaves in a more sociable way. She goes into the breakfast-room, takes a picture book from the bookcase and sits in the window-seat behind a red curtain, reading about cold northern coasts and looking at the stormy view.
Her cousin John, who is fourteen and bullies her, finds her after Eliza tells him where she is. He makes her stand in front of him, says she has no right to take the books because she depends on his family, and throws the book at her. It hits her and she falls, cutting her head on the door. Jane tells him he is wicked and cruel and calls him a murderer and a slave-driver. He rushes at her and they struggle. Mrs. Reed arrives with the servants Bessie and Abbot, and Jane is carried upstairs to be locked in the red-room.
