Chapter summary

Lockwood tells the story. The next day he walks four miles through mud and snow to Wuthering Heights. Joseph refuses to open the door, and a young man with a pitchfork finally leads him into the warm main room, where a slim young woman sits silent. Lockwood speaks to her as Mrs. Heathcliff. She refuses his help and turns on him when he asks for tea.

Heathcliff arrives and refuses to send a guide. At the meal Lockwood guesses wrongly about who is married to whom. Heathcliff says Mrs. Heathcliff is his son's widow, and the young man says his name is Hareton Earnshaw. The snow grows heavy. Heathcliff says Lockwood could only share a bed with Hareton or Joseph, so Lockwood tries to leave, takes Joseph's lantern and is knocked down by two dogs. His nose bleeds. The housekeeper Zillah pours cold water down his neck and brings him in. He is dizzy, drinks some brandy and is taken to bed.
