Chapter summary

Dr. Lanyon writes that on January 9th he received a registered letter from Jekyll, dated December 10th. Jekyll begs him to drop everything and take a cab to his house. Jekyll's servant Poole will be waiting there with a locksmith. Lanyon must force open the cabinet door and take a particular drawer from the press marked E. He must carry it home to Cavendish Square and wait there until midnight, when a man will call in Jekyll's name.

Lanyon thinks Jekyll is mad but feels bound to help. He does as he is told, and the locksmith needs two hours to open the door. The drawer holds powders, a phial of red liquid and a notebook of dates with brief notes. Lanyon loads an old revolver before the visit.

Just after midnight a small man in oversized clothes arrives, and the sight of him disturbs Lanyon deeply. He eagerly asks for the drawer, then mixes the red liquid with a powder, and it changes colors. Before drinking it, he offers Lanyon a choice between leaving and seeing what follows. Lanyon stays and watches the man change into Jekyll. He never recovers from the shock.
