Chapter summary
One October night a maidservant looks out and sees an elderly white-haired gentleman speak politely to a small man she knows as Mr. Hyde. Hyde suddenly flies into a rage and beats the old man with a cane, stamping on him until bones break. The maid faints. When she recovers, the killer has gone and the victim lies dead in the road.
The cane has snapped, and one half is in the gutter. The victim's purse and gold watch are still on him, along with a sealed letter addressed to Utterson. The dead man is Sir Danvers Carew. Utterson knows the broken cane at once, since he gave it to Jekyll years ago.
He takes the police to Hyde's rooms in Soho. They are richly furnished, but they have been hastily ransacked. Burned papers lie in the grate, and the police find the other half of the cane. Hyde has vanished. There are no portraits of him, few people knew him, and everyone describes him differently.
