Act summary

In Act 2, Polonius sends his servant Reynaldo to Paris to ask questions about the behavior of his son Laertes, then Ophelia comes to him upset by a visit from Hamlet. Polonius decides the cause is love and goes to tell the King. At the castle Claudius welcomes Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and asks them to find out what troubles Hamlet. Ambassadors report that the threat from Norway is settled. Polonius reads out a letter Hamlet wrote to Ophelia and proposes to watch the two together. Hamlet, reading a book, answers Polonius with riddles, then greets Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and questions why they came. The players arrive, and Hamlet asks them to perform a play with some lines of his own added. Left alone, he scolds himself for doing nothing and settles on a plan to test the King.
