Chapter summary
On a dreary night in November, Victor finally brings the creature to life. It is one in the morning, rain patters on the window, and his candle is almost burnt out when the creature's dull yellow eye opens and its limbs move. Victor is filled with horror at its appearance and rushes from the room. He tries to sleep but dreams that he kisses Elizabeth and that she turns into the corpse of his dead mother. He wakes to find the creature holding up the bed curtain and staring at him, and he runs out and spends the rest of the night pacing the courtyard.
In the morning he meets Henry Clerval, who has arrived by the Swiss coach to study at Ingolstadt, and Victor is glad to see him. Victor fears that Henry will see the creature, but when they go to his rooms he finds them empty. He becomes wildly excited and laughs uncontrollably. A nervous fever follows and keeps him ill for several months, and Henry is his only nurse. As spring comes Victor slowly recovers, and Henry tells him a letter from Elizabeth has been waiting.
