Chapter summary

When Victor is seventeen, his parents plan for him to study at Ingolstadt. Before he leaves, Elizabeth catches scarlet fever. She recovers, but Victor's mother, who nursed her, becomes infected and dies. On her deathbed she tells Victor and Elizabeth that her greatest hope was their marriage, and that it will now comfort their father. Victor is granted a few weeks before he must go, and then he leaves for Ingolstadt after saying goodbye to his family and his friend Henry Clerval.

At Ingolstadt Victor feels alone among strangers. Professor Krempe, the first teacher he meets, tells him that all the time spent on his old books was wasted and that he must begin his studies again. Professor Waldman is away at first. When Victor hears him lecture, Waldman praises modern chemists for what they have achieved, saying they seem able to command the thunders of heaven. Victor visits him afterward, and Waldman advises him to study every branch of natural philosophy and offers the use of his laboratory. The day, Victor says, decided his future.
